About Us

Otaru is a tourist city visited by as many as 8 million people annually. Once a flourishing gateway for the development of Hokkaido, its history remains today as a beautiful cityscape thanks to progressive urban planning. In recent years, as the population continues to decline, the local economy has become increasingly reliant on tourist traffic. In this context, we strive to highlight the city's unique personality by sharing its essential charms. We hope to encourage the preservation of the cultural heritage behind this "uniqueness" and foster civic pride through the recognition of local identity. Our wish is for residents and visitors to interact in a meaningful way, and we act to help Otaru become a sustainable tourist destination.

A regional trading company delivering the "Charms of Otaru"
while creating products and experiences in collaboration with the local community.

What is "Otaru-ness"?
Where does "Otaru-ness" come from?
UNGAPLUS was launched with the desire to share the stories behind the historical buildings, canals, and culture that have shaped this city as its true charm. Under the theme "Gifting Otaru," we work to weave the "Stories of Otaru" into local craftsmanship and deliver them to as many people as possible through our business. By telling Otaru's unique stories and exploring what makes it special, we aim to express the essential allure of the city. By delivering these through products and experiences, we hope to revitalize the region and prosper together with everyone connected to this land.

About Our Store

In December 2019, we opened our physical store in the Former Otaru Warehouse, a designated historic building of Otaru City with over 130 years of history (located next to the Otaru Museum Canal Building). Overlooking the canal, we operate from this business warehouse built by Kitamae-bune shipowners—a fitting place to convey the history of Otaru, which flourished as a port of call. In the North Canal area, where you can experience Otaru's history firsthand, we share the heartbeat of this city through our business in this repurposed historic landmark.

Wholesale Business "Kitamae Ginsen"

From Otaru, "Gifting Hokkaido."
From the late Edo period through the Meiji and Taisho eras, the "Kitamae-bune" ships were essentially mobile general trading companies that traveled freely across the Sea of Japan from Western Japan to Hokkaido, transporting all manner of goods. Otaru, which became the gateway to the development of Hokkaido during the Meiji period, flourished as a major logistics hub where Kitamae-bune shipowners established many commercial warehouses, attracting people and resources. Now, UNGAPLUS brings the story of the "Kitamae-bune" from Otaru to the modern age. Just like the Kitamae-bune of old, we carefully select superior food products from various regions across Hokkaido and deliver them to everyone nationwide from the "Former Otaru Warehouse," Hokkaido's first historic commercial warehouse.
