Otaru flourished as a gateway to the development of Hokkaido from the Meiji to Taisho periods. With the development of the herring fishery, it further prospered thanks to the "Kitamae-bune" ships that connected the Sea of Japan to the Seto Inland Sea and Osaka.
Taking place at the "Former Otaru Warehouse - unga plus gallery," built by the owners of the Kitamaejin (North Sea ships), this exhibition focuses on the glass culture inherited in the two places of "Otaru" and "Etchū" (Toyama), which were ports of call. It will showcase the works of glass artists based in Toyama who create in a variety of expressive forms.
Reflect on the history connected by the Kitamae-bune (North Sea merchant ships) and enjoy the charm of glass that has been passed down through time.
