Hokkaido, 150 years after the Meiji Restoration, marking the end of the Edo period. Although Hokkaido's history may not be long from a Japanese historical perspective, we are delighted to introduce artists who create beautiful, inspiring handicrafts and their works, all while cherishing the inspiration received from this land.

From handicrafts that bring joy and beauty to everyday life, we present tableware and ornaments. We feature works by potters, glass artists, woodworkers, and accessory designers primarily active in Otaru and Sapporo. These works can also be purchased at UNGAPLUS stores and on our official website.

Yohei Iwayama

Warmth in a refined, simple design. The design, stripped of all unnecessary elements, offers stability that can be used with peace of mind even while reading or working. The brown lines flowing across the surface, like wood grain, are formed by iron powder in the clay reacting with the glaze, appearing like shooting stars. Approximately 10% of the clay used is locally sourced from Hokkaido.

The generous and warm vessels embody the strength and kindness of the earth, and each unique expression, born from overlapping coincidences, is like a natural phenomenon—never exactly the same. Yusuke Saito

Yusuke Saito, based in Hokkaido, primarily creates ceramic vessels using porcelain clay. His vessels are shaped to evoke the delicate and soft wrinkles of fabric. He thinly rolls out clay and forms it into natural wrinkles. After bisque firing, the pieces are carefully sanded and then fired without glaze, followed by meticulous polishing with diamond files and finishing paper. This process results in works with a smooth, slippery texture. The clay used is porcelain, which is often white and contains very little organic matter, originating from stone.

Otaru Sightseeing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

We answer frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How to get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Main Line; the rapid "Airport" train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with a direct 75-minute ride from New Chitose Airport.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas around the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you add glass blowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflections on the water create a scene iconic of Otaru. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet foods should I definitely try in Otaru?

Sushi, kaisendon (seafood bowl), and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru is home to many renowned sushi restaurants, so much so that there's an area called "Sushi-ya Dori" (Sushi Restaurant Street). Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experiential workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops by simply walking along the street, including specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of the Music Box Museum.

Q. Can Otaru's tourist spots be explored on foot?

Otaru Station, the Canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the Canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can fully enjoy sightseeing even without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather perfect for strolling, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn leaves and seafood. Winter boasts snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," and spring sees fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Also, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring resort in the mountains.

Q. Are there child-friendly spots in Otaru?

Hands-on glass workshops (such as glassblowing and sandblasting) offer plans for elementary school children and older. Additionally, the Otaru Aquarium (in the Shukutsu area) is popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What tourist destinations can be visited on a day trip from Otaru?

Sapporo (about 32 minutes) is, of course, popular, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, about 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave cruise in summer, about 1 hour). These are popular day-trip courses. Otaru serves as a base to extensively enjoy the western Hokkaido area.
