Shigeo Fujimori (1936-1987), a commercial designer and the first secretary-general of the "Otaru Canal Preservation Society" founded in 1973, painted approximately 150 paintings of the Otaru Canal during his lifetime. This exhibition, timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the completion of the Otaru Canal this year, will feature original artwork of Fujimori's representative works, as well as tracing the history of the Otaru Canal from past articles in the local town magazine "Monthly Otaru."
Work Introduction: "The Red Canal"
After 1955, the role of the Otaru Canal visibly declined, and it fell into disrepair. A plan to build a new highway emerged, and in 1971, demolition began on the stone warehouses in the Haboro district. In 1973, a group of volunteers formed the "Otaru Canal Preservation Society." The ensuing debate divided the city for ten years. On November 12, 1983, despite years of preservation efforts, pile-driving work began for the canal's infill. The painting Fujimori completed that day depicts the entire canal landscape covered in red. Known as a symbol of the end of the preservation movement, it is one of Fujimori's most representative works.
