Hokkaido Seikan Otaru Factory, Warehouse No. 3 The Hokkai Seikan Otaru Factory's Warehouse No. 3 was built in 1924 (Taisho 13), the year after the completion of the Otaru Canal, as the third warehouse of Hokkai Seikan K.K., which was established at the end of the Meiji era in response to the boom in canned food production due to the development of the North Pacific fishing industry. It is a reinforced concrete building with four floors. As a warehouse for storing cans for salmon and trout canning, the building featured five storage rooms on each floor, spiral chutes and lifts on the canal-side exterior wall for efficient transportation of products to docked ships, and stairs for people to move around, all reflecting a rational design and the latest technology of the time. The No. 3 Warehouse is a symbolic building that has shaped the history of the canal, and the group of facilities that were essential for the development of Otaru have been designated as the city's historical buildings. The scenery is still loved by many citizens. In 2021, Hokkai Canning Co., Ltd., which owned the warehouse, proposed to the city of Otaru to demolish the 3rd warehouse, citing the high cost of maintenance due to its age (nearly 100 years old) and deterioration. However, many citizens expressed their strong desire to preserve it, and in 2022, Hokkai Canning Co., Ltd. transferred the warehouse to the city of Otaru free of charge. Currently, activities by an NPO corporation have started with the aim of creating unique Otaru charm centered on the preservation and utilization of this warehouse, and the area called Kita-Unkaku is once again bustling with activity.
