Reflecting on Otaru's Jomon history The area from Otaru to Yoichi is densely packed with ancient Jomon period ruins, where numerous earthenware, stone tools, and sculptures have been discovered. Reflecting on that history from Otaru, an area with many precious ruins remaining in Japan, we asked Sapporo-based ceramic artist Toshihisa Oishi, who attempts to express the memories and records of the earth, to create the "nawame series."
"Hidasuki" is a decorative technique that is representative of Bizen ware.
In the past, this technique involved wrapping straw around pieces to prevent them from sticking together when they were loaded into the kiln. The straw wrapping resembles a sash and is colored scarlet, hence the name "hi dasuki." By wrapping the straw around the piece during firing, a chemical reaction occurs between the clay and straw, resulting in the appearance of beautiful scarlet lines. Each piece is handmade, so the "hi dasuki" gives each piece its own unique look.
[Chopstick rest]
Oishi's chopstick rests become more beautiful with each use, and you can feel the power of the earth.
[Square plate]
This square plate has a rough texture that gives you the feeling of the warmth of earth.
【cup】
The flat handle fits comfortably in your hand, with two fingers comfortably inside, providing a stable grip.
[Rice bowl]
The inside is smooth, allowing you to eat every last grain of rice.
[Earthenware pot]
The base is made by brushing Nopporo clay that has been turned into a mud-like substance onto a clay pot.
The sides of the earthenware pots are wrapped in straw during firing, causing a chemical reaction between the clay and straw, resulting in the appearance of scarlet lines. The inside is glazed to prevent staining. The lid and handle of each pot have rope marks, a common sight on Jomon pottery. You can easily cook fluffy, hot rice in no time, or make hot pot, udon noodles, or porridge! Depending on how you use it, you can enjoy a variety of dishes.
Oishi's tea bowls become more beautiful with each use, and you can feel the power of the clay. They are pottery for everyday life that will enrich your daily dining table.
