Kelp was once highly valued and expensive, used not only as food but also as medicine. As Zen Buddhism spread along with its vegetarian cuisine, kelp came to be used as a broth ingredient, eventually becoming a staple in the lives of ordinary people. Essential to "Washoku" (Japanese cuisine), recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2013, kelp, with its high umami content, remains an indispensable ingredient for Japanese people, both then and now.
Kelp has been considered auspicious because its old name, "Hiromé," sounds similar to the word for "spreading" or "widening." While the origin of the word "konbu" (kelp) is unclear, it is said that the "kunbu" (昆布) found in Chinese literature may be the source. "Yoro-konbu" (喜ぶ, to rejoice), a play on words that spread during the Edo period, is another example. It is also said that the characters "ko-bu-fu" (子生婦, meaning "child-bearing woman") were used to represent kelp, and it became one of the items in betrothal gifts, with the wish for the prosperity of descendants.
The deep flavor, which mixes the mellow richness and texture of seasoned kelp with the delicate mouthfeel of grated kelp, is perfect as a snack with tea or as an appetizer with alcohol.

Returns, Exchanges, and Cancellations
Please note that we cannot accept returns, exchanges, cancellations, changes to your order details, or modifications to your order for customer convenience after the order has been completed.
If, in the unlikely event, the delivered item is defective, please contact us via the inquiry form within 7 days of receiving the item.
In the case of a defective item, we will cover the shipping costs associated with the return.
