The BEST Things to Do in Otaru, Japan|Otaru Day Trip

Otaru Tengu Mountain has long been a symbol of Otaru and is well known by the citizens of Otaru.
It is 532 meters above sea level and can be seen from all parts of central Otaru.
The summit can be reached by ropeway, which runs every 6 to 12 minutes, or by car (closed during the winter season).

Otaru Tengu Mountain

Otaru Tengu Mountain has five observatories, and the summit observatory in particular has been awarded a star in the "Michelin Green Guide Japon" and is a spot not to be missed.
The view of the city below, Otaru Port, Ishikari Bay, and on a clear day, the Shakotan Peninsula and the Mount Shokanbetsu can be seen from the top of the mountain.
The beautiful night view, which looks as if it is studded with jewels, is said to be one of the "Three Great Night Views of Hokkaido.
The varied city lights created by the harbor and mountainous terrain make for a night view that you will never get tired of.

Otaru Tengu Mountain

At the "Tengu no Yakata" (Tengu's House) located at the top of the mountain, about 700 masks of tengu (long-nosed goblins), both large and small, collected from all over Japan are on display.
Why not try "Hana Nade Tengu-san," which is said to have magical powers and ward off evil and make wishes come true if you stroke the tip of its nose?

And "sea of clouds" has become increasingly popular in the past few years.
In Otaru, the probability of cloud sea is high from late spring to early summer.
It is very difficult to see a sea of clouds unless the weather and topography are right, but at Otaru Tengu Mountain, there are days when you can enjoy a "sea of clouds + night view" or a "sea of clouds + sunset", which are rare and spectacular views that cannot be seen anywhere else.
