It takes about 40 minutes from the center of Sapporo and about 30 minutes from Otaru City by car. Passing through the Asari River hot spring resort before Otaru, the "Asari Sky Loop" suddenly appears. The stunning collaboration of this huge loop bridge and the Asari Dam has won the Otaru City Urban Landscape Award and has become popular among architecture fans. The Asari Dam is located at the top of the Asari Sky Loop.
The Asari Dam is 73.9 m high, and its dammed lake, Otaru-Nai Lake, and the Asari Sky Loop, which curves beautifully from the top of the embankment, can be viewed from the mountains and the sea when the weather is fine. In the fall, the surrounding mountains change color, making it a popular spot for viewing the autumn leaves and the blue sky reflected on the lake surface. From the observation deck, visitors can see the mountains beyond the surface of the water, and the clear ridges stretching far into the distance offer a unique view.
On the shores of Lake Otalunai, there is the Asari Dam Memorial Hall and a park with exhibits of dam-related materials, as well as a sports field with tennis courts near the dam. The memorial hall displays a model of the dam, panels introducing the construction of the Asari Dam, and panels introducing the water supply facilities in Otaru City.
