The BEST Things to Do in Otaru, Japan|Otaru Day Trip
Located just a minute walk from JR Otaru Station, Otaru Triangle Market was named after the triangular shape of its land and roof. The motto of Triangle Market is "Cheap! is "cheap". Visitors can enjoy shopping in the unique atmosphere and liveliness of the market, with shoppers happily calling out to each other on either side of the market.
The market is about 200 meters long, with 16 stores lining the narrow, 2-meter-wide slope on both sides, including six restaurants where visitors can enjoy their meals from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. They offer rice bowls made with fresh seafood and daily set menus using seasonal ingredients, and you can even have items purchased at the market cooked on the spot to create your own original rice bowl.
The market is said to have started around 1948, shortly after World War II. It started when seven or eight street vendors opened stores in front of Otaru Station, and later developed into a morning market. The market offers fresh seafood such as crab, sea urchin, and scallops, as well as vegetables, fruits, and daily necessities, making it a popular and convenient place to shop for daily necessities or to pick up souvenirs.
