Panjyu
Otaru Travel Guide 2023
The BEST Things to Do in Otaru, Japan|Otaru Day Trip
Panjyu has long been popular as a snack for the common people, especially in Otaru, and it is generally believed that the word "panjyu" was coined by combining the words "bread" and "manjyu". It is a baked sweet derived from Imagawa-yaki, and is a well-known confectionary in Otaru as well as in Ise City, Mie Prefecture, and Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture.
The crispy, thinly baked crust is filled with red bean paste, which gives it a chewy texture. Semi-spherical or bell-shaped, these baked sweets are slightly larger than takoyaki. They are smaller and easier to eat than Imagawa-yaki and taiyaki, and are also popular because of their affordable price. The combination of the crispy surface, soft and chewy inside and hot sweet red bean paste is addictive.
