Otaru Travel Guide 2023
The BEST Things to Do in Otaru, Japan|Otaru Day Trip
Kamaei, Otaru's popular fish cake shop, has long been loved by Otaru citizens and many other Hokkaido residents, and was established in 1905. It now boasts a history of more than 100 years and has a total of 12 shops, including four in the city, six in Sapporo and one at the airport.
The red and white plate kamaboko are indispensable for celebratory occasions, and there are also non-fried kamaboko such as the sea urchin plate and the grilled plate.
At the head office factory in Sakai-cho, Otaru City, visitors can observe the production of fish cakes made by skilled craftsmen through a glass window for free, and the fish cakes fried on the spot are very popular. The most recommended item is the shop's exclusive 'bread roll', which was developed by the previous president in 1962. The bread roll, made from pollock, minced pork and onion, is wrapped in ultra-thin bread and deep-fried. The crispy texture, just the right amount of salt and the sweetness of the surimi make this an excellent fish paste dish.
