Yorutono Bakery

Otaru Travel Guide 2023
The BEST Things to Do in Otaru, Japan|Otaru Day Trip

In September 2019, Yorutono Bakery opened a bakery in a residential area at the top of "Jigokuzaka" (Hell Hill), a particularly steep slope in Otaru, a town famous for its hills. Unless you are familiar with the streets of Otaru, you may need help with your navigation system.

The store is housed in an old private house introduced by the "Otaru Old Private House Restoration Project," an NPO. The quaint ivy-covered building was once used as a glass studio. They renovated the old private house and did most of the interior work by themselves. The concrete walls are used to create a very cozy space.

The owner, who trained at a German bread store in Sapporo, opened the shop. When one thinks of German bread, one thinks of brownish bread made with rye and wheat, but Yorutono Bakery also offers bread made with Hokkaido wheat and homemade yeast, as well as rye bread, whole wheat bread, and hard meal bread filled with walnuts and dried fruits. The most popular is croissant.

Most of the whole wheat flour used is stone-ground, and the bread has already gained a good reputation in the local community. The store opens at 10:00 a.m., and the 20 or so varieties of bread on the table are so popular that most of them are gone by the afternoon. Reservations can be made, so it might be safer to call before visiting.

The unfamiliar name of the bakery, "Yorutono," is derived from the alias of a fox. From the beginning, they decided to make a restaurant with a fox motif, and after doing some research, they found that the nocturnal fox was called "yorunotono," which is an old saying about foxes. He liked the word and decided to name the restaurant after it.
