Ginrinso, a hot spring restaurant located on Cape Hiraiso in Sakura-machi, Otaru City, was originally a herring palace built in Yoichi Town in 1900 as the residence of Yasunojo Inomata, a net owner who once made his fortune through herring fishing. It was built over a period of about three years, and was constructed with the utmost luxury.
In 1938, it was moved to its current location as part of the urban planning of east Otaru. The following year, in 1939, it was opened as a ryokan and named "Ginrinso" by Hidehiko Ishiguro, then Director General of the Hokkaido Government.
It is currently selected as one of the 100 best cultural properties in Hokkaido, and is "the only herring palace where you can stay overnight in Japan.
The main building, which is a herring palace, is also designated as a historical building by Otaru City as the "Former Inomata Residence.

Original products that convey the attractions of Otaru are developed and sold in a storefront converted from the former Otaru warehouse headquarters, which is said to be the oldest business warehouse in Hokkaido, located in the Otaru North Canal area. The shop tells the story of Otaru's prosperity in the pioneering days of Hokkaido and the history of the Kitamaebune, and displays and sells processed seafood and agricultural products from the port of call and Hokkaido, as well as original products by craftsmen and artists associated with Otaru.
