Nakayoshi Shokudo Pepechan-chi

Otaru Travel Guide 2023
The BEST Things to Do in Otaru, Japan|Otaru Day Trip

Nakayoshi Shokudo Pepechan-chi is located about a five-minute walk straight up the Ryugu Bridge over the Otaru Canal toward the mountain side where Otaru Station is located. It is a 10-minute walk from Otaru Station. At lunch time, it serves as a creative lunch diner, and at night it becomes a popular izakaya where local regulars gather. The restaurant was originally located in Sapporo under the same name, but when they moved to Otaru a few years ago, the restaurant was relocated and opened in Otaru as well.

The restaurant is run by a couple, and the name comes from their dog, Pepe-chan. The store is marked by an illustration of a cute big white dog on the wall next to the entrance, which is probably "Pepe-chan. The interior of the restaurant is a relaxing space with the warmth of wood, with four tables and about 10 counter seats.

In addition to the most popular daily "Nakayoshi bento," the lunch menu offers more than 80 dishes with a variety of ideas, including rice dishes such as "Omuritan" (omelet with a tender egg on top), noodles such as "Pepe-style udon" (pork mixed with egg), children's lunch and dessert, and a set menu. Drinks are available for 150 yen. All of them look so delicious that it is hard to decide what to choose.

The evening menu is also rich in variety, including not only standard dishes such as zangi and french fries, but also ideas for dishes that go well with alcohol, rice dishes, noodles, fried foods, vegetables, and snacks. We offer a wide variety of alcoholic beverages including beer, shochu, plum wine, whiskey, cocktails, and Hokkaido sake.

With a friendly, homey atmosphere, and playful tricks here and there throughout the restaurant, you are sure to feel right at home at this highly recommended restaurant.

Original products that convey the attractions of Otaru are developed and sold in a storefront converted from the former Otaru warehouse headquarters, which is said to be the oldest business warehouse in Hokkaido, located in the Otaru North Canal area. The shop tells the story of Otaru's prosperity in the pioneering days of Hokkaido and the history of the Kitamaebune, and displays and sells processed seafood and agricultural products from the port of call and Hokkaido, as well as original products by craftsmen and artists associated with Otaru.
