The BEST Things to Do in Otaru, Japan｜Otaru Day Trip
Established in 1968, "Sanshiro Honten" is the oldest established yakiniku restaurant in Otaru and has been loved by Otaru residents for more than half a century already since its opening. Passing through the gate marked "Hanazono Ginza" from Sushiya-dori Street and going up the hill toward Sapporo, you will find "Sanshiro Honten" on your right.
"Sanshiro Honten" has a wide variety of dishes on the menu, and the prices are very reasonable. The most popular item on the menu is the 380 yen plate of horumon (innards), which has become synonymous with Sanshiro. The hormone is well-prepared, plump, and free of odor. It is a must-try item.
The "Mellow Beef," a lean fillet of beef, is also very popular and is described on the menu as "please eat it rare. The sagari (hanging tender) is a very beautiful and flavorful meat. And for Genghis Khan(a style of lamb barbecue), we are very happy to have both fresh lamb and the old-fashioned lamb rolls. There are also horse ribs and raw horse meat (from Kumamoto), which are rare in Hokkaido.
If you have never had yakiniku in Otaru, you may not know this, but you will get "soup sauce" at the end of the meal. The soup is made by adding kombu dashi (kelp broth) to the yakiniku tsuke-dare and drinking it like soup. This is a unique Otaru yakiniku culture, and in fact, it seems to have originated at Sanshiro.

The shop tells the story of Otaru's prosperity in the pioneering days of Hokkaido and the history of the Kitamaebune, and displays and sells processed seafood and agricultural products from the port of call and Hokkaido, as well as original products by craftsmen and artists associated with Otaru.
