It is about a 10-minute walk from JR Otaru Station. A little further back from the commonly known "Jigokuzaka" (Hell Hill) toward Otaru University of Commerce is a beautiful picture book-like church called "Tomioka Church" by the locals. Its current official name is "Catholic Otaru Church Tomioka Cathedral," and until 2015 it was called Catholic Tomioka Church.
It was built in 1929 and is designated as Historical Building No. 70 by Otaru City. The exterior is thought to have been designed in the style of Nagasaki's Oura Tenshudo and other churches, and the distinctive building with its red tongari roof and octagonal bell tower is a mixture of medieval Romanesque and Gothic styles.
A major attraction of Tomioka Cathedral is the many stained glass windows. The stained glass windows in the chapel's large windows are old from the original construction and have simple geometric patterns. Soft light shines through the white plaster walls. Various types of glass are used for the stained glass, and the pink, yellow, green, and other fine uneven glass is no longer made in Japan.
The chapel is open to all visitors at any time. Unusually for a church, visitors are free to take pictures inside the chapel.

Original products that convey the attractions of Otaru are developed and sold in a storefront converted from the former Otaru warehouse headquarters, which is said to be the oldest business warehouse in Hokkaido, located in the Otaru North Canal area. The shop tells the story of Otaru's prosperity in the pioneering days of Hokkaido and the history of the Kitamaebune, and displays and sells processed seafood and agricultural products from the port of call and Hokkaido, as well as original products by craftsmen and artists associated with Otaru.
