Otaru Travel Guide 2023
The BEST Things to Do in Otaru, Japan|Otaru Day Trip
Otaru was one of the first areas in Hokkaido to be opened to the Japanese culture, including Buddhism. Shiotani-Maruyama, as well as Mt. Akaiwa and Mt. Tengu, which are also located in Otaru, were all mountains of faith opened by many ascetic practitioners who fled to the new land of Hokkaido after being forced to leave Honshu by the "Haibutsu Kishaku (movement to abolish Buddhism)". In the Meiji era (1868-1912), mountain ascetic monks were seen practicing asceticism on the rocky terrain.
Today, Mt. Shioya Maruyama is a popular mountain for Otaru citizens, and like Mt. The view from the top is spectacular, with a panoramic view of the Shakotan Peninsula, the Niseko mountain range, and Mount Yotei.
The trail enters the mountainous area from JR Shioya Station, and it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the summit, which has a small rocky peak. A large anchor is dedicated at the top, and the shrine is inscribed with "Echigo-kuni Watanabe Genzaemon, Meiji 14. Since the mountain is a good landmark from offshore, it is thought that the donation was made to pray for safety and good catches in the fishing industry.
