Tonkatsu Umi-no-ya

Otaru Travel Guide 2023
The BEST Things to Do in Otaru, Japan|Otaru Day Trip

Umi-no-ya, a rare tonkatsu specialty restaurant in Otaru, was opened in 2016 in Hanazono, Otaru, by the owner who worked for many years at the famous tonkatsu restaurant "Isen" and wanted to bring authentic tonkatsu to Otaru residents. With the mission to keep that tender and easy-to-eat taste directly from the famous restaurant with the same ingredients used back then, we serve tender, crispy, and attractive tonkatsu every day.

The owner named the restaurant "Umi-no-ya" after the beautiful sea of Otaru and his love for singer-songwriter Masahiko Minoya, and the interior of the former coffee shop was remodeled in a marine style by the owner himself, with the trademark "whale" that he designed himself. The owner himself renovated the interior of the former coffee shop into a maritime-style restaurant and opened it for business.

The standard loin cutlet set meal, with tender meat and crispy batter, comes with free refills of rice, miso soup, and cabbage. The restaurant also offers a wide variety of dishes other than tonkatsu, such as the beautifully presented mille-feuille cheese cutlet popular among women, curry cutlet with stewed pork tendon, which is available in limited quantities and has many hidden fans, fried shrimp set menus, hamburger steak set menus, and so on.

They try to create a space that is easy to enter, even for a woman alone, and they offer good taste and attention to detail. It is a restaurant specializing in tonkatsu that you will want to visit again and again.
