The BEST Things to Do in Otaru, Japan¡ÃOtaru Day Trip
The former Otaru Warehouse, with its conspicuous orca-shaped orcas along the Otaru Canal, is one of the most representative buildings in Otaru, a city with many historical buildings.
It was built in 1890 by Nishiya and Nishide of Kaga Hashidate on the southern beach of Otaru Port, where land reclamation had just been completed.
Later, due to the Nishide family's circumstances, the warehouse was managed by Kyuemon Yamamoto (2nd generation), who had also sought a base in Otaru on the Kitamae Senpaku¡Êcargo ships that sailed the Japan Sea during the Edo period¡Ë, and the Otaru warehouse was enlarged and reconstructed in the shape of the present "B" and became a large warehouse covering 3,000 Ö.
The killer whales on the roof are believed to have been installed during this period.
Although stone warehouses were built one after another along the coastline of Kitahama and Minamihama, the Otaru Warehouse, which occupied a prime location with its long and wide width, stood out from the crowd.
It is said that the warehouse was built in a secluded courtyard to block out information on how much merchandise was stored in the warehouse and to keep the cargo handling area out of sight.
In addition, the first floor of the office building was used as a passageway to block the entrance of wagons.
The current Otaru Department Store UNGA¢¬ is a remnant of the original passageway for wagons.
The building is a symbol of Otaru, which was the largest economic city in northern Japan.
