The BEST Things to Do in Otaru, Japan|Otaru Day Trip
The abandoned ruins of the Former Temiya Line, located a 10-minute walk from JR Otaru Station, has become a popular tourist attraction in Otaru. The first railroad in Hokkaido and the third in Japan to transport coal, the line was opened from Temiya to Sapporo in 1881 by an American railroad engineer, Joseph Uley Crawford.
After prospering as a coal and marine products shipper, the line was nationalized in 1906 and served as a means of transportation for the people of the province until the late Showa period (1926-1989), when it was closed down in November 1985.
Otaru City has paved a 1.6 km stretch of the Former Temiya Line, which was closed down, as a walking path, leaving the tracks, circuit breakers, and other remains intact. The Otaru City Museum, which utilizes the Former Temiya Station as its main building, exhibits steam locomotives and Bank of Japan cash cars that were once used on the Temiya Line.
For its contribution to the modernization of Japan, the site of the Former Temmiya Line is registered as a Heritage of Industrial Modernization by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry as an American-style railway-related heritage site in Hokkaido.
