The BEST Things to Do in Otaru, Japan|Otaru Day Trip
Ebisu Shrine, located in Shukutsu, Otaru, was built in 1856 and is known to have been revered by the three major amimoto of Shukutsu. The main shrine, now housed in a covered hall, is designated as a historical building (No. 58) by Otaru City.
Located on a hill on the Shukutsu Coast, the temple grounds offer a beautiful view of the Otaru Sea, and the two boat ema dedicated in the shrine are recognized as cultural assets constituting the "Kitamae Ship" Japanese Heritage Site.
There are also two sacred trees, a mulberry and a yew, designated as preserved trees by Otaru City.
The deity is Yae Kotoshironushi no Okami, who is considered to be the son of Okuninushi no Okami and is sometimes equated with Ebisu-sama.
He is said to be the god of the sea, the god of commerce, and the god of oracle, and is said to bring prosperity, good fortune, protection from bad luck, healing from illness, safety at sea, and travel safety.
Because it is located in Otaru's Shukutsu, a town that prospered from the fishing industry, it is believed to be especially beneficial for maritime safety as the god of the sea.
