The BEST Things to Do in Otaru, Japan|Otaru Day Trip
Shrines named Suitengu can be found throughout Japan.
The Suitengu Shrine in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is the main shrine and enshrines Emperor Antoku and others, but the Suitengu Shrine here in Otaru does not actually belong to that group.
Otaru's Suitengu Shrine is registered with the Shiribeshi Branch of the Hokkaido Shrine Office. It is a 10-minute walk from Otaru Station or Minami Otaru Station, and is located at the top of a hill called "Gaijinzaka" in Shinonome-cho.
Located on a hill about 55 meters above sea level, the location spot on the right side of the shrine building offers a panoramic view of Otaru Port, the Sea of Japan, and the Otaru cityscape.
Yaezakura, Someiyoshino, and Ezoyama-zakura cherry trees are planted around the shrine grounds, and a graceful cherry blossom snowstorm can be seen in spring.
The Suitengu Festival, one of Otaru's three major festivals, is held every year in mid-June and is well known to local residents along with Ryugu Shrine and Sumiyoshi Shrine.
The deities enshrined at the shrine are Mizuha-no-Me no Kami, Ukemochi no Kami, Izanagi no Kami, and Izanami no Kami.
The deity Yatsunami-no-Uesami-no-Sei is believed to be beneficial for maritime safety and great catches of fish, while the deity Hoshoku is believed to bring about a good harvest and prosperous business.
The deity Izanaki and Izanami are said to bring blessings for marital bliss, fulfillment of love, prosperity of offspring, and fertility.
Three monuments have been erected on the temple grounds, one of which is the Mitsuya Yoson Kuhi. He is a haiku poet from Yufutsu-gun, Hokkaido.
The second is the Takuboku Ishikawa Poet Monument (Ishikawatakuboku Kahi). One of the three monuments in Otaru City is located here.
The last one is Kawamura Bunichiro Poetic Monument. He was a doctor and poet from Otaru.
The guardian dogs at the entrance of the shrine seem to be much larger than those at other shrines. The pedestal is also tall, and it is said to be very rare in Japan to have such a large dog.
