The BEST Things to Do in Otaru, Japan｜Otaru Day Trip
Shukutsu Panorama Observatory, famous for its beautiful sunrise and sunset views, is located on top of a hill approximately 70 meters above sea level in the northeastern part of Otaru City. Looking east from the observatory, the view is accented by Cape Takashima in the foreground, and beyond that is a spectacular view of Ishikari Bay. Beyond Ishikari Bay on a clear day, Mt. Shokanbetsu and Mt. Hiyoriyama Lighthouse and Otaru City Herring Palace sit on the cape, and the Otaru Aquarium's outdoor facility "Kaijyu Koen" in the foreground helps to create the spectacular view from the Shukutsu Panorama Observation Deck.
On the other hand, from late April to late August, the west side of the island offers an impressive sunset over the Sea of Japan, attracting families and couples with cameras in hand at dusk on a clear day. On clear days at dusk, families and couples gather with cameras in hand to watch the sunset.
The observation deck is a parking lot and free of charge, so we recommend that you go there by car or rental car. If visiting by public transportation, take the Hokkaido Chuo Bus bound for Otaru Aquarium from JR Otaru Station, and the last stop, Otaru Aquarium, is at the foot of Shukutsu Panorama Observation Deck. The elevation of the observatory is about 70 meters above sea level, so it would be fun to climb up the slope while enjoying the scenery at a leisurely pace.

Original products that convey the attractions of Otaru are developed and sold in a storefront converted from the former Otaru warehouse headquarters, which is said to be the oldest business warehouse in Hokkaido, located in the Otaru North Canal area. The shop tells the story of Otaru's prosperity in the pioneering days of Hokkaido and the history of the Kitamaebune, and displays and sells processed seafood and agricultural products from the port of call and Hokkaido, as well as original products by craftsmen and artists associated with Otaru.
