Otaru Music Box Store, one of Otaru's popular tourist attractions, is one of the largest music box specialty stores in Japan, marked by a steam clock located at the Mercure Intersection. There are seven sister stores in Otaru, including the main building at the fairy tale intersection. The store displays and sells about 5,000 types of music boxes, including original music boxes, for a total of about 80,000 items in all. The main building alone has over 25,000 music boxes of approximately 3,400 types.
The building was constructed in 1915 as the headquarters building of Kyosei Corporation, a leading rice merchant. It was registered as a historical building designated by Otaru City on March 29, 1989, the same year Otaru Music Box Museum opened. The ornate ceiling, railings, and second floor corridor remain as they were when they were built. The store is divided into five floors, each themed with beautifully decorated and sounding music boxes.
The Steam Clock, the symbol of the main entrance, is the world's largest steam clock, measuring 5.5 meters high, 1 meter wide, and weighing 1.5 tons. It was created by Canadian clockmaker Raymond Saunders, the first person in the world to create a steam clock. Every 15 minutes, five steam whistles play a melody in a five-note scale, powered by steam.

Tai monaka chocolate with 23 lucky spots in Otaru decorated on the packaging. Chocolate and rice puffs are added to the 100% glutinous rice monaka dough, which is baked using traditional techniques.

Original products that convey the attractions of Otaru are developed and sold in a storefront converted from the former Otaru warehouse headquarters, which is said to be the oldest business warehouse in Hokkaido, located in the Otaru North Canal area. The shop tells the story of Otaru's prosperity in the pioneering days of Hokkaido and the history of the Kitamaebune, and displays and sells processed seafood and agricultural products from the port of call and Hokkaido, as well as original products by craftsmen and artists associated with Otaru.
