At its peak, Otaru had more than 50 sake breweries, but today only Tanaka Sake Brewery, which produces Otaru's local sake Takaragawa, remains. Tanaka Sake Brewery has been in business for 120 years, since 1899, and has two outlets in the city, the main shop and the Kameko-gura, which have long been popular with the public.
The main shop is a two-storey wooden building built in 1927 and is designated as a 'historical building' by Otaru City. The shop, which has been restored to its early Showa period, displays old signboards and account books, allowing visitors to enjoy the atmosphere of an old sake brewery.
The Tanaka Sake Brewery has three distinctive features. First, all sake is made from rice grown in Hokkaido. Secondly, all the sake produced is junmai sake. The third is that it is a 'four-season brewery', which means that sake is brewed throughout the year. Sake is generally brewed in winter, but at the Kameko-gura, the other brewery, it is brewed all year round.
Tanaka Brewery has been using 'Comet' rice grown in Niseko, Ondara, Kodaira and Atsuma since 1998 (Heisei 10), when the first Hokkaido-produced rice suitable for sake brewing was created. At the head office, the Junmai Ginjo Takarakawa, a limited edition sake from the head office with a reprinted label that reproduces the label actually used, is very popular. Visitors can also enjoy tastings.

The shop tells the story of Otaru's prosperity in the pioneering days of Hokkaido and the history of the Kitamaebune, and displays and sells processed seafood and agricultural products from the port of call and Hokkaido, as well as original products by craftsmen and artists associated with Otaru.
