Wine Bistro Katabami

Otaru Travel Guide 2023
The BEST Things to Do in Otaru, Japan|Otaru Day Trip

Wine Bistro Katabami is located in a back alley about a 5-minute walk from JR Otaru Station, and is a hideaway with only 6 seats at the counter. The restaurant has the atmosphere of a French bar, and you can enjoy wine and French cuisine in a casual, unpretentious style. Reservations are essential as it is very popular!

The owner-chef was born and raised in Otaru. Wanting to own a restaurant, he entered the culinary world at the age of 25 and has studied at hotels in Sapporo and Otaru. He found a storefront that used to be a flower shop in a quiet location off an alley off Shizuya-dori that matched the image of the restaurant he envisioned, and in January 2018, he made his dream come true. Rather than a restaurant, he tries to create an atmosphere like a diner where anyone can feel free to come in.

He named the restaurant "Katabami" because he wanted to be as persistent as "katabami," the family crest and a fertile wildflower, and because the language of katabami flowers is "joy," he wanted to bring joy to people.

He is also a certified sommelier and offers a selection of Otaru wines, sparkling, and about five different kinds of red and white wines. You can order by the glass as well as by the bottle. Even if you are a beginner, the chef will help you choose the right wine to go with your meal.

The dishes at Katabami are made with the best local ingredients available that day, so what you have today is not necessarily what will be available tomorrow. In spring, herring from Otaru, scallops from Zenibako come next, sea urchin and scallops from Otaru after May, and saury and flatfish in autumn.
