Former Okagawa Pharmacy
Otaru Travel Guide 2023
The BEST Things to Do in Otaru, Japan|Otaru Day Trip
Located a 5-minute walk from JR Minami-Otaru Station, the Former Okagawa Pharmacy is a renovated historical building that was once an apothecary called "Okagawa Pharmacy" and now operates a cafe, rental space, and guest house combined. "Rent, Eat, and Stay"... The concept of the project is to diversify and decentralize the operation of real estate. The building was built in 1930 and is designated as a historical building by Otaru City.
The first and second floors are occupied by a lovely cafe called "Cafe White," with a very stylish white atrium. The windows let in pleasant sunlight, and at night the store is illuminated with electric lights. The former dispensing room is now used as a kitchen, and the design and ornaments that still remind one of a pharmacy can be seen here and there, providing both a modern and retro atmosphere.
Although it is called a café, the menu is extensive, offering not only light meals such as cookies and cakes, but also solid meals such as curry and pasta. The most popular dish is the original curry with spices and pork from Goshi, which is stewed until tender. The rice is from Rangetsu in Hokkaido. The food, as well as the sweets and drinks, make use of locally grown ingredients as much as possible.
The back of the cafe is a guesthouse. There is a guest lounge with a grand piano and a stately atmosphere, and the second floor is the accommodation space. There is also a Japanese-style room with tatami mats laid out for overnight stays, and the first floor is equipped with a projector and other facilities that are said to be used for wedding receptions.
The name alone does not do justice to Otaru's unique mix of modern and retro, old and new, which is what you would expect from a restaurant in Otaru. If you want to "do something" or "meet new people" in Otaru, this is the place to visit.
