Asahi Observatory stands on a small hill about 190 meters above sea level behind Otaru Station, from which you can see Ishikari Bay and Mt. Shokanbetsu in the distance. It is also famous as a place to enjoy the night view of Otaru, one of the three most beautiful nightscapes in Hokkaido. A literary monument of Takiji Kobayashi, a proletarian writer associated with Otaru, and a monument to the poet Hotaru Oda Kwantung have been erected on the site.
The park is also home to 18 walking trails totaling 14 km in length, where various trees and wild birds can be seen in each season, making it a relaxing place for citizens to enjoy a casual stroll in nature. It is also known as the sacred ground for the popular anime "The Last Weapon Girl.
Asahi Observatory has a special feature that other observatories do not have. It is the view map. Ordinary guide maps are fine during the daytime, but at night they can be difficult to see because of the darkness. However, the guide map of the Asahi Observatory is illuminated with a fluorescent green light, allowing visitors to see the map at night while viewing the night view.

Original products that convey the attractions of Otaru are developed and sold in a storefront converted from the former Otaru warehouse headquarters, which is said to be the oldest business warehouse in Hokkaido, located in the Otaru North Canal area. The shop tells the story of Otaru's prosperity in the pioneering days of Hokkaido and the history of the Kitamaebune, and displays and sells processed seafood and agricultural products from the port of call and Hokkaido, as well as original products by craftsmen and artists associated with Otaru.
