The BEST Things to Do in Otaru, Japan|Otaru Day Trip
"Kameju Bakery" has been in business for 70 years and has been loved by Otaru residents for many years since its establishment in 1949. After the war, the previous owner returned to Otaru after being interned in Siberia and felt the importance of food and eating with his own body, and almost self-taught himself to start baking bread and opened "Kameju Bakery". Today, the business is run by the second-generation owner, his wife, and their son, the third-generation owner.
In the glass case inside the store, there are about 40 kinds of breads, ranging from prepared breads such as "potato salad," "yakisoba," "Neapolitan," and "hamburger steak" to pastries such as "butter cream" and "amanatto," giving a sense of nostalgia with the scent of the Showa period.
The most popular item is the "Atsukiri Cream" invented by the previous generation. It is a 3-centimeter-thick, moist bread sandwiched with butter cream, and it is very hearty. The buttercream, made with peanut butter and margarine, has a rustic and nostalgic taste. The shop also offers a "thin slice of cream," which is half the thickness of the "Atsu-kiri" slice, and more buttercream can be added for an additional 20 yen.
The store is located near Minami-Otaru Station and opens at 4:00 in the morning, when local fishermen who have returned from fishing in the morning come to buy. Kameju Bakery has been loved by the locals for its simple taste that has not changed since the old days. If you are hungry during a stroll in Otaru, why not stop by?
