The fishing port on Takashima is Takashima Fishing Port, and within the bay is the symbolic floating Benten Island. Benten Island was once home to a Benten shrine dedicated to the god Benten, and a red torii gate still stands on the island.
Benten Island was the site where the Fisheries Research Agency started the oldest coastal stationary water temperature observation in Hokkaido in 1897, and its impressive scenery, selected as one of the eight sights of Otaru's eight wards, is a historical symbol that people here began a resourceful relationship with the sea.
