The BEST Things to Do in Otaru, Japan｜Otaru Day Trip
Located in the Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Kaigan National Park facing the Sea of Japan, Otaru Aquarium was built in July 1958 as a "marine venue" for the Hokkaido Grand Exposition, and started operation the following year in 1959 as Otaru City Aquarium. It is located in Shukuzu, about 15 minutes by car from the Otaru Canal, a famous sightseeing spot. Visitors can also take a leisurely ride on an ocean sightseeing boat departing from Otaru Port Pier No. 3.
The facility consists of four areas: the "Main Building," which exhibits a wide variety of fish and shellfish; the "Dolphin Stadium," where you can enjoy dolphin and otter shows; the "Marine Animal Park," where seals, walruses, sea lions, penguins, etc. are kept; and the amusement park, Otaru Shukatsu Marine Land, where you can always see more than 250 marine animal species and Visitors can observe more than 250 kinds of marine animals and fish at close range.
In the main building, visitors can enjoy observing marine creatures in a variety of elaborate exhibits, while the Dolphin Stadium and Marine Animal Park offer unmissable shows from time to time. The Steller's sea lion diving show and the giant walrus performance are as popular as the dolphin show, which features a series of acrobatic performances.
The Marine Animals Park is located in a natural cove, and wild sea lions and largha seals sometimes wander in from the shore, and in fact, there have been cases where they have been kept in captivity.

Original products that convey the attractions of Otaru are developed and sold in a storefront converted from the former Otaru warehouse headquarters, which is said to be the oldest business warehouse in Hokkaido, located in the Otaru North Canal area. The shop tells the story of Otaru's prosperity in the pioneering days of Hokkaido and the history of the Kitamaebune, and displays and sells processed seafood and agricultural products from the port of call and Hokkaido, as well as original products by craftsmen and artists associated with Otaru.
