"Panju," a snack enjoyed by the common people, primarily in Otaru, has been around for a long time. The general theory is that the name is a portmanteau of "pan" (bread) and "manju" (a sweet bun). It's a baked confection derived from Imagawayaki, and besides Otaru, it's also a popular specialty in cities like Ise in Mie Prefecture and Ashikaga in Tochigi Prefecture.

Several kinds of freshly baked panju lined up in a display case. The photo shows 'tsubuan' (red bean paste) and 'cream'.

Inside the crispy, thinly baked crust, there's plenty of red bean paste, offering a delightfully chewy texture when you bite into it. They are either hemispherical or bell-shaped, slightly larger than takoyaki. Being smaller and easier to eat than Imagawayaki or Taiyaki, and affordably priced, also contributes to their popularity. The combination of a crispy exterior, a chewy interior, and hot, sweet red bean paste is incredibly addictive once you try it.

Otaru Tourism Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

We answer frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How to get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is the JR Hakodate Line. The rapid "Airport" train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with a direct journey of about 75 minutes from Shin-Chitose Airport.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?

If you want to explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street at a relaxed pace, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you add experiences like glassmaking workshops, the Music Box Museum, and dining, a 2-day, 1-night trip would be even more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. The gas lamps along the stone warehouses light up, and the sight of them reflecting on the water is a representative Otaru scene. In winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event is held, where you can enjoy a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet foods should I definitely eat in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are especially famous. Otaru is home to so many famous sushi restaurants that there is even an area called "Sushi Restaurant Street." Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass shops like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of Orgel Doh (Music Box Museum).

Q. Can Otaru's tourist spots be explored on foot?

Otaru Station, the canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can fully enjoy sightseeing without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru tourism?

Each season has its own unique charm. Summer (July-August) has mild weather, perfect for strolling, while autumn (September-October) offers autumn leaves and fresh seafood. Winter brings snowscapes and the "Snow Light Path," and spring has relatively fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Also, Asarigawa Onsenkyo, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring resort in the mountains.

Q. Are there any spots in Otaru that families with children can enjoy?

Hands-on glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) offer plans that children from elementary school age can participate in. Also, Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What tourist destinations can I visit on a day trip from Otaru?

Sapporo (about 32 minutes) is, of course, an option, and Yoichi (Nikko Whisky Distillery, about 20 minutes) and Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave Cruise in summer, about 1 hour) are popular day-trip courses. You can widely enjoy the western Hokkaido area with Otaru as your base.
