Just a short distance from the quay at Otaru Port in Temiya, a well-worn concrete block peeks out from the water. Grass grows on it, and seabirds are resting their wings. This is the foundation for a machine called the "Hokutan Loader," which was built in 1939 to load coal onto ships.
The remains of Otaru Port, which was a base for the development of Hokkaido and where coal was shipped, are also included as a cultural asset that makes up the Japan Heritage site "Coal and Iron Port."Otaru Port has seen many different faces over the years, having once been a port of call for Kitamae ships and a fishing port for herring, a coal shipping port from the Meiji to Showa periods, and more recently as a port for cruise ships.
