In June 2021, a new cafe called "Kissashitsu Labradoressence" opened in Okusawa, converted from an old folk house. The origin of the unusual name comes from a mysterious stone called "Labradorite," which changes its appearance like a peacock's feather, showing blue and green hues depending on the viewing angle. The sparkle of this stone is called "Labradoressence" (light of Labrador).

A set of cheese toast and coffee that I ordered at a table on the second floor. The other two had tea.

At first glance, it may seem like a plain gray stone, but the name implies the idea that "only those who truly look can see the light." Upon opening the sliding door with the noren (shop curtain) and entering the cafe, the first floor has a counter with four seats and two tables for two people.

The second floor is a tatami-matted Japanese-style room, and it has a wonderful relaxing atmosphere as if you were in your grandmother's house.

The second floor is a tatami-matted Japanese-style room where you take off your shoes. It has three tables, allowing guests to sit back and relax. Digital camera photography (including smartphones) is prohibited inside the cafe; only film camera photography is allowed.

Hazelnut latte with a cherry on top, subtly sweet and gentle in flavor.

For drinks, they offer two types of coffee made with charcoal-roasted beans, as well as cafe latte, hazelnut latte, Assam tea, roasted green tea soy latte, and a rich menu of other beverages that even those who don't like coffee can enjoy. They also have light meals like toast and soup, and daily changing sweets such as pudding and doughnuts.

It's a cafe where you can spend a relaxed and comfortable time, with a somehow nostalgic and warm atmosphere.

The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Main Line; the rapid "Airport" train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. From New Chitose Airport, it's about 75 minutes without transfers, making it easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido.

Q. How long does it take to sightsee in Otaru?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas such as the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you add glass blowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, an overnight stay of 1 night and 2 days will make your trip even more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. The gas lamps illuminate along the stone warehouses, and the reflections on the water create a scene emblematic of Otaru. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru has an area called "Sushi Street" with many renowned sushi restaurants. Also, local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecake and soft-serve ice cream are not to be missed.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, such as specialty glass shops like Kitaichi Glass and the Otaru Music Box Museum main building.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season has its unique charm. Summer (July-August) is ideal for strolls due to mild weather, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and seafood. Winter features snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring has fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?
