From Asakusabashi, a famous photo spot along the Otaru Canal, cross the large Rinko-sen street and walk straight along the Nichigin-dori street towards Otaru Station. Eventually, you will arrive at the intersection with Ironai-odori. This area preserves many bank buildings constructed during the period when Otaru was known as "the leading economic city in Northern Japan," a time when, at its peak, 25 financial institutions had their head or branch offices here.

The former Otaru Branch of Mitsui Bank is a historic building symbolizing the prosperity of Otaru, 'the leading economic city in Northern Japan,' from the late Meiji era to the early Showa era. It is now designated a National Important Cultural Property.

Moreover, various architectural styles from different eras, designed by top-tier architects, are clustered within a narrow 500-meter radius, ranging from the 113th National Bank and Bank of Japan buildings from the Meiji era to the former Postal Savings Bureau (now the City Museum and Literature Museum), a pioneer of post-war modern architecture. This scene represents the modernization of Japan and is truly unique.

A full view of the former Hokkaido Takushoku Bank Otaru Branch, where writer Takiji Kobayashi once worked, taken from the opposite side of the intersection.

The former Yasuda Bank Otaru Branch is a typical bank building from the early Showa period, incorporating Greek architectural styles.

Q. How do I get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Line; the rapid "Airport" train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. From New Chitose Airport, it's about 75 minutes without transfers, making it easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido.

Q. How much time does Otaru sightseeing take?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you include glass blowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit the Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflections on the water create Otaru's iconic scenery. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What Otaru gourmet foods should I definitely try?

Sushi, seafood rice bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru has an area called "Sushi Street" with many renowned sushi restaurants. Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather perfect for strolling, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn leaves and seafood. Winter features snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring has fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru City. Additionally, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a tranquil hot spring resort in the mountains.

What spots in Otaru are enjoyable for families with children?
