If you cross the main Rinkosen street from Asakusabashi, a famous photo spot for the Otaru Canal, and head straight down Nihongin-dori Street towards Otaru Station, you will eventually come to the intersection with Ironai-dori Street. In this area, many bank buildings remain from when Otaru was known as "northern Japan's leading economic city," and at its peak, as many as 25 financial institutions had head offices and branches.
Moreover, from the 113th Bank of Japan building from the Meiji period to the former Savings Bureau (Municipal Museum of Art and Literature), a pioneer of postwar modern architecture, various architectural styles from each era are lined up within a small radius of 500 meters, all designed by first-class designers. This scene represents the modernization of Japan and is unlike anything else.
