Good fortune from Otaru, the city of shipping...
May good fortune be with you, supported by a flow that has been preserved without interruption.
May your luck open up.
In the Meiji period, Otaru prospered as the gateway to the development of Hokkaido.
Kitamaebune ships sailed the vast ocean with their pure white sails, bringing many goods and cultures to this land through their trade with Honshu.
UNGAPLUS delivers original products embodying the history and culture that still remain in Otaru, as well as fine goods from Kitamaebune port towns, from the "Former Otaru Warehouse Main Building," the first commercial warehouse in Hokkaido built by Kitamaebune shipowners Magosaku Nishide and Shohachi Nishitani.
The story of Otaru, which walked hand-in-hand with the Kitamaebune, begins here.

Warehouse 1: Otaru Hyakka UNGA↑
Created with the local community
This section features original products meticulously crafted with local businesses, artisans, and creators, all emphasizing "Otaru-ness." Otaru, which flourished as a commercial port during the Meiji period, boasts numerous historical buildings such as the Otaru Canal and surrounding stone warehouses, and bank architecture symbolizing Japan's modernization. Town planning centered on historical and cultural heritage is underway. We deliver gift products that package this history and culture, as well as sweets, processed marine products, and crafts made with local residents, allowing you to experience the essence of Otaru.

Warehouse 2: Northern Handicrafts
Delivering regional charm
Hokkaido, where we live, is blessed with rich nature that changes with the four seasons. There are beautiful mountain ridges, trees painted in vivid autumn colors, serene snowy landscapes, and a vast land surrounded by magnificent scenery. "Northern Handicrafts" are born from the perspective of people who live on the land of Hokkaido, conversing daily with the vast nature and being nurtured by it. We deliver works that can only be created here, along with the sentiments of artisans who have gazed upon the land of Hokkaido.

Warehouse 3: NAKASHI
Bringing traditional clothing to the present
During the heyday of Otaru Port, when many Kitamaebune ships were anchored in every available space, the area around the canal was bustling with "nakashi" (stevedores). Many nakashi also worked at the Former Otaru Warehouse, which faced the boat basin. Inspired by the work clothes worn by these nakashi, the original brand "NAKASHI" was created. We deliver the stories spun by Otaru, reflecting on the daily life of the Former Otaru Warehouse in those days, along with furniture made during the Meiji and Taisho periods and tools that bear the traces of port town life.

Warehouse 4: Shirafudo
Showcasing regional quality products
From the Meiji to Taisho eras, Otaru flourished as the gateway to the development of Hokkaido. It prospered with the herring fishing industry, connected by "Kitamaebune" ships sailing between Osaka and Hokkaido. The Kitamaebune not only transported cargo but also served as "kaizumisen" (trading ships) that bought and sold goods at various ports of call, carrying products and cultures from different regions and creating new ones. Inside the store, fishing gear and old tools related to herring fishing, which was a main commodity of the Kitamaebune, are displayed. We deliver carefully selected items from the ports of call, recalling the history connected by the Kitamaebune.

Otaru Tourism Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Here are answers to frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.
Q. How to get to Otaru?
The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Main Line, taking about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station on the rapid "Airport" train. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with a direct 75-minute ride from New Chitose Airport.
Q. How long does it take to sightsee in Otaru?
If you want to explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street leisurely, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. Adding glass blowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, two days and one night would make for a more fulfilling trip.
Q. When is the best time to visit the Otaru Canal?
Evening to night is especially recommended. The gas lamps along the stone warehouses and their reflection on the water create a scene iconic to Otaru. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event is held, offering a magical atmosphere.
Q. What gourmet food should I definitely try in Otaru?
Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru has an area called "Sushi-ya Dori" (Sushi Restaurant Street), indicating the concentration of renowned sushi restaurants. Also, local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream are not to be missed.
Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?
Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the main Otaru Music Box Museum.
Q. Can I tour Otaru's tourist spots on foot?
The area from Otaru Station to the Canal and Sakaimachi Street is all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the Canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can easily sightsee without a rental car.
Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?
Each season offers different attractions. Summer (July-August) is ideal for walks due to mild weather, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn foliage and seafood. Winter features snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring has fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.
Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?
There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Also, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a tranquil hot spring area in the mountains.
Q. Are there child-friendly spots in Otaru?
Hands-on glass workshops (glassblowing, sandblasting, etc.) offer plans suitable for elementary school children and older. Additionally, Otaru Aquarium (in the Shukutsu area) is popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.
Q. Are there day trip destinations from Otaru?
Sapporo (approx. 32 minutes) is, of course, an option, and Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 minutes) and Shakotan Peninsula (summer Blue Cave cruise, approx. 1 hour) are popular day trip courses. You can extensively enjoy the western Hokkaido area with Otaru as your base.
