Otaru is Hokkaido's second oldest port city after Hakodate, and was once a bustling gateway to Hokkaido's economy. The old streets and stately architecture that remain throughout the city give a glimpse into the city's prosperity.
In the cultural sphere, talented young people from all over the country gathered and competed with each other, producing many outstanding writers, including Takiji Kobayashi and Sei Ito. The works, literary magazines, manuscripts, letters and other materials of these writers are a valuable literary asset left to the present day.
The voices of local citizens, who regretted the loss of these documents and wanted to create a facility to prevent their damage, came to fruition, and the Otaru City Literary Museum opened on the second floor of the former Otaru Regional Savings Bureau (built in 1952) on November 3, 1978.
The Otaru City Literary Museum is a facility that houses and exhibits approximately 1,000 books and documents by novelists, poets, tanka poets, and haiku poets with ties to Otaru, including Takiji Kobayashi and Sei Ito, and is committed to passing on these precious cultural assets to future generations. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum also hosts special exhibitions on various literary themes, and offers literary lectures and literary walks that visit places associated with authors and their works.
