Otaru, a port town that opened early in Hokkaido, second only to Hakodate, once flourished as the gateway to Hokkaido's economy. The old townscapes and stately buildings that remain throughout the city evoke the prosperity of that era.

In terms of culture, talented young people gathered from all over the country, honing their skills and producing many excellent writers, including Takiji Kobayashi and Sei Ito. The works and literary magazines of these writers, as well as their manuscripts, letters, and other materials, are valuable literary assets that have been passed down to the present day.

The citizens' desire to prevent the dispersal and damage of these materials led to the establishment of the Otaru Municipal Museum of Literature. It opened on November 3, 1978, on the second floor of the former Otaru Local Savings Bureau (built in 1952).

The Otaru Municipal Museum of Literature houses and displays approximately 1,000 works and materials by novelists, poets, tanka poets, and haiku poets associated with Otaru, including Takiji Kobayashi and Sei Ito. It is a facility that passes on these valuable cultural assets to the future. In addition to permanent exhibitions, it holds special exhibitions on various literary themes and offers literary courses and literary walks to places associated with writers and their works.

Otaru Tourism Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Here are answers to frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.
Q. How to get to Otaru?
The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Main Line, with the rapid "Airport" train taking approximately 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. From New Chitose Airport, it's also easily accessible, taking about 75 minutes without transfers, making it convenient for tourists from outside Hokkaido.
Q. How much time is needed for Otaru sightseeing?
If you want to leisurely explore the main areas around the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you add glass blowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 2-day, 1-night trip would make your journey even more fulfilling.
Q. When is the best time to visit the Otaru Canal?
Dusk to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflection on the water is a representative sight of Otaru. During winter (January-February), "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.
Q. What gourmet food must I try in Otaru?
Sushi, seafood rice bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru has an area called "Sushi Restaurant Street" with many famous sushi restaurants. Also, local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream are not to be missed.
Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?
Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can stop by many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass shops like Kitaichi Glass and the Otaru Music Box Museum Main Building.
Q. Can I walk around Otaru's tourist spots?
Otaru Station, the Canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can fully enjoy sightseeing even without a rental car.
Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?
Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather, perfect for walks, while autumn (September-October) offers autumn leaves and seafood. Winter features snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," and spring sees fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.
Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?
There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Also, the Asarigawa Onsen Village, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring resort in the mountains.
Q. Are there any spots in Otaru that families with children can enjoy?
Hands-on glass workshops (glassblowing, sandblasting, etc.) have plans that elementary school students can participate in. Also, the Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.
Q. What tourist destinations can I visit on a day trip from Otaru?
Sapporo (approx. 32 minutes), Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 minutes), and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave cruise in summer, approx. 1 hour) are popular day trip courses. Otaru serves as a base for exploring the wider western Hokkaido area.
