"PRESSCAFE" is located in a corner of the historic "Former Shibusawa Warehouse," built in 1895 (Meiji 28), at the foot of "Kitahama Bridge" which spans the "North Canal," the northern end of the Otaru Canal.

Press Cafe's proud original recipe

While the famous Otaru Canal is only used by sightseeing cruise ships, the North Canal remains active today, with working boats and small vessels like cruisers anchored there. The streetscape of the North Canal, lined with old stone warehouses, is very charming. The interior of the Former Shibusawa Warehouse, with its timber-frame and stone construction, features high ceilings, large windows facing the canal, and classic cars that are still in use.

The interior of Press Cafe is striking with classic cars illuminated by dim lights scattered throughout

The menu boasts fragrant coffee brewed cup by cup with a paper drip method using specialty coffee beans, as well as a rich selection of sweets like pancakes. On weekdays, there are reasonably priced lunch options, but the top recommendation is the "North Indian Style Chicken Curry," made with an original recipe. Its spicy, slightly mature soup has an addictive flavor.

The dimly lit interior of the cafe, with only the light from lamps hanging from the ceiling. The window seats on the Otaru Canal side are the most popular, and getting one is a sign of luck

We answer frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How to get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is by the JR Hakodate Main Line, with the rapid "Airport" train taking about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with a direct journey of about 75 minutes from New Chitose Airport.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas around the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you add glass workshop experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be even more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit the Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. The gas lamps along the stone warehouses and their reflection on the water create a scene that is representative of Otaru. In winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet food must I eat in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru even has an area called "Sushi Restaurant Street" where many famous sushi restaurants are gathered. Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecake and soft serve ice cream.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of the Music Box Museum.

Q. Can I visit Otaru's tourist spots on foot?

Otaru Station to the Canal to Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can fully enjoy sightseeing without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru tourism?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather, perfect for strolling, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn leaves and delicious seafood. Winter features snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," and spring sees fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

Otaru City has hotels and ryokan with natural hot springs scattered throughout. Additionally, the Asarigawa Onsen Village, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring area nestled in the mountains.

Q. Are there spots in Otaru enjoyable for families with children?

Hands-on glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) offer plans that elementary school students can participate in. Also, Otaru Aquarium (in the Shukutsu area) is popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. Are there day trip destinations from Otaru?

Sapporo (approx. 32 minutes) is popular, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (summer Blue Cave cruises, approx. 1 hour). Otaru serves as a great base to explore the wider western Hokkaido area.
