"Western Restaurant Mangiare TAKINAMI" is a Western-style restaurant where you can fully enjoy seafood and mountain delicacies from local Otaru and Shiribeshi. Part of the restaurant retains the old wooden-framed stone warehouse, allowing visitors to feel the history of Otaru.

Mangiare's signature dish,

Our top recommended signature dish is "Paella," topped with shrimp, crab claws, clams, mussels, squid, and more. Each pot is carefully cooked to order, allowing the rice to absorb the rich flavors of the seafood and create an aromatic, perfectly cooked dish.

Joy fills you when it's served. The visually appealing dressed omelet rice is also a popular menu item at Mangiare.

"Acqua Pazza with Otaru's Hakkaku and Mantis Shrimp" is a dish prepared by steaming locally caught Hakkaku (sailfin poacher) and mantis shrimp with white wine and water, resulting in a rich seafood flavor.

The interior of Mangiare is decorated with a calm, woody aroma, and the tables are spacious.

"Yoichi-produced Kitajima Pork Homemade Prosciutto with Marinated Onions" is prosciutto made only from bone-in ham and natural salt, featuring a sweet fat and matured for over a year. Our diverse menu can cater to various occasions, from everyday dining to anniversaries and banquets.

Otaru Sightseeing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

We answer common questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How do I get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Main Line; the rapid "Airport" train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. From New Chitose Airport, it's about 75 minutes without transfers, making it easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?

Half a day to a full day is a good estimate if you want to leisurely explore the main areas around the canal and Sakaimachi Street. If you include glass blowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Evening to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflections on the water create a scene emblematic of Otaru. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet food should I definitely eat in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru is home to many renowned sushi restaurants, even having an area called "Sushi-ya Dori." Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the Otaru Music Box Museum Main Building.

Q. Can I walk to Otaru's tourist spots?

Otaru Station, the canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can easily sightsee without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) is mild and perfect for strolling, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and delicious seafood. Winter brings snowscapes and the "Snow Light Path," and spring sees fewer tourists, making it a quieter time to visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Also, Asarigawa Onsen Village, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a tranquil hot spring resort in the mountains.

Q. Are there child-friendly spots in Otaru?

Hands-on glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) offer plans for elementary school children and older. Additionally, Otaru Aquarium (in the Shukutsu area) is a popular family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What day-trip tourist destinations can I visit from Otaru?

Sapporo (approx. 32 min), Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 min), and Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave Cruise in summer, approx. 1 hour) are popular day-trip options. Otaru serves as a base to enjoy a wider area of western Hokkaido.
