The Otaru Canal has become world-famous as a tourist attraction in Hokkaido. Lined with numerous historic buildings, every angle along the canal is picturesque. A new classic for sightseeing in Otaru that allows you to fully enjoy the popular Otaru Canal area is the "Otaru Canal Cruise." It's a short 40-minute boat trip where you can rediscover the charm of Otaru, a city of history and romance.

The canal cruise boat departs from the foot of Chuo Bridge. Photo taken of guests waiting to board immediately after operations began.

The appeal of the Otaru Canal Cruise is that you can enjoy different views of the canal depending on the season (spring, summer, autumn, winter) and time of day (before sunset, daytime, after sunset). Please experience this approximately 40-minute boat trip on the Otaru Canal Cruise, where you can enjoy a different experience and canal scenery every time you visit.

Two boats return to the south end of Otaru Canal after a 40-minute boat trip at dusk in summer, with the Otaru Canal illuminated by the setting sun in the background.

The boarding fee for the day cruise is 1,800 yen for adults and 500 yen for children, and for the night cruise, it is 2,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for children. Pamphlets are available in Japanese and multilingual versions (English, Chinese (Simplified/Traditional), and Korean).

From above Chuo Bridge, a canal cruise boat, after guests have boarded, turns around to embark on its 40-minute journey.

Q. How to get to Otaru?

From Sapporo, the most convenient way is via the JR Hakodate Main Line, with the rapid "Airport" train taking about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. From New Chitose Airport, it's about 75 minutes without transfers, making it easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?

Half a day to a full day is a good estimate if you want to leisurely explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street. If you include glass blowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit the Otaru Canal?

Evening to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflections on the water create a scene representative of Otaru. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet foods should I definitely eat in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru even has an area called "Sushi-ya Dori" (Sushi Street) that is home to many famous sushi restaurants. Also, local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream are not to be missed.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the Otaru Music Box Museum Main Building.

Q. Can Otaru's tourist spots be explored on foot?

Otaru Station, the Canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can definitely enjoy sightseeing without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather, perfect for strolling, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and delicious seafood. Winter boasts snow scenery and the "Snow Light Path," and spring sees fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokan with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Additionally, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo, located about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is a popular quiet hot spring resort nestled in the mountains.

Q. Are there spots in Otaru that families with children can enjoy?

Hands-on glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) offer plans that elementary school students can participate in. Also, the Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is a popular family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What tourist destinations can be visited on a day trip from Otaru?

Sapporo (approx. 32 minutes) is a given, but Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave Cruise in summer, approx. 1 hour) are popular day trip options. You can use Otaru as a base to extensively enjoy the western Hokkaido area.
