Otaru Muse was born from the desire to offer delicious homemade dishes made with carefully selected ingredients, a wonderful musical atmosphere unique to Otaru, all while bathed in the warm glow of candles.

The Western restaurant was opened in Otaru in 2009 by a chef husband who trained for about 10 years at a restaurant in Toyako Town, specializing in preparing delicious dishes with carefully selected ingredients, and his wife, a candle artist.

The freshly made, steaming 'Demi-glace Stewed Hamburg Steak' is Otaru Muse's signature dish. Photographed from directly above.

It is located about a 10-minute walk from Otaru Station, heading towards Sapporo on National Route 5. The sign, designed with a candle motif, is easy to spot, and you'll be greeted by an antique British-made door from the 1930s that perfectly matches Otaru's exotic atmosphere.

Stepping inside, you'll find the flickering candlelight, creations of the owner's wife, creating a relaxed atmosphere that feels a world away from everyday life, almost as if you've been transported to a foreign country. The name "Muse" also means "to ponder." Please enjoy your meal in the soft glow of the candles, relaxing, having fun, and perhaps even engaging in a bit of contemplation.

The dimly lit interior, decorated with antique items, has an excellent exotic atmosphere.

The menu is committed to homemade specialties, with every dish prepared from scratch, creating unique flavors that can only be found here. They are also very particular about their ingredients, always striving to provide safe, healthy, and delicious food.

The signature dish is the "Stewed Hamburg Steak," made with 100% beef and pork from Kuromatsunai. The demi-glace sauce is, of course, homemade and additive-free, carefully simmered with aromatic vegetables such as tomatoes and beef sinews in red wine. Even the herbs used for flavoring are home-grown, showing their dedication to quality. The aroma of the sauce, matured over many years, whets the appetite.

Artist photos displayed on an antique piano at the back of the store further enhance the exotic atmosphere.

The lunch menu is extensive and reasonably priced, featuring soup curry, omurice, and fried dishes. The bite-sized ozoni served with drinks after the meal is a delightful thoughtful touch. The adzuki beans are meticulously simmered, with a perfect balance of sweetness and saltiness, and the soft shiratama dumplings provide a comforting feeling.

For dinner, in addition to the stewed hamburg steak, there's the chef's special dinner course, omurice, and a wide selection of appetizer dishes that pair well with alcohol.

Otaru Tourism Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

We answer common questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How do I get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Line; the Rapid Airport train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with a direct 75-minute train ride from New Chitose Airport.

Q. How long does it take to tour Otaru?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas such as the canal area and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. Adding glass craft experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be even more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit the Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflections on the water create a scene iconic of Otaru. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet food should I definitely eat in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru is home to many renowned sushi restaurants, so much so that there's an area called "Sushi-ya Dori." Also, local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecake and soft-serve ice cream are not to be missed.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Sakaimachi Street has a concentration of workshops and shops. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, such as specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the Otaru Music Box Museum Main Building.

Q. Can I walk around Otaru's tourist spots?

Otaru Station to the Canal to Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can fully enjoy sightseeing without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru tourism?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather, perfect for walks, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn leaves and seafood. Winter boasts snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring sees fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Also, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring resort in the mountains.

Q. Are there any spots in Otaru that families with children can enjoy?

Interactive glass workshops (glass blowing, sandblasting, etc.) offer plans that elementary school students can participate in. Also, the Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What tourist destinations can be visited on a day trip from Otaru?

Sapporo (about 32 minutes) is, of course, an option, but Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, about 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave Cruise in summer, about 1 hour) are also popular day-trip courses. Otaru serves as a great base for exploring the wider western Hokkaido area.
