Otaru Aquarium, located within Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Kaigan Quasi-National Park facing the Sea of Japan, was constructed in July 1958 as the "Marine Venue" for the Hokkaido Grand Exhibition and began operations the following year, in 1959, as the "Otaru City Aquarium."

It is located in Shukutsu, about a 15-minute drive from the famous Otaru Canal. You can also enjoy a leisurely trip by taking a sightseeing boat from Otaru Port's Pier No. 3.

The facility is comprised of four areas: the "Main Building" which exhibits a wide variety of marine life, the "Dolphin Stadium" where you can enjoy dolphin and sea lion shows, the "Marine Mammal Park" which houses seals, walruses, Steller sea lions, penguins, and more, and the amusement park "Otaru Shukutsu Marineland." Here, you can observe the ecology of over 250 species of marine animals and fish up close at all times.

In the main building, you can enjoy observing marine creatures with various ingenious exhibits, while the Dolphin Stadium and Marine Mammal Park regularly hold unmissable show times. The powerful diving show of Steller sea lions and the performances of giant walruses are as popular as the dolphin shows, which feature one acrobatic performance after another.

The Marine Mammal Park utilizes a natural cove as is, and it seems there have been cases where wild Steller sea lions and spotted seals have wandered in and were subsequently kept for breeding.

Otaru Tourism Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

We answer questions frequently asked by first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How to get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Main Line; the rapid "Airport" train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It is also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, taking about 75 minutes from New Chitose Airport without transfers.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing usually take?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas such as the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you add glass workshop experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be even more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the sight reflected on the water is a representative view of Otaru. In winter (January to February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet food should I definitely eat in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru has so many famous sushi restaurants that there is even an area called "Sushi Restaurant Street." Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can stop by many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of the Music Box Museum.

Q. Can I visit Otaru's tourist spots on foot?

Otaru Station, the Canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can enjoy sightseeing sufficiently without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season has a different charm. Summer (July-August) is ideal for strolling with mild weather, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn foliage and seafood. Winter brings snowscapes and the "Snow Light Path," and spring has fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru City. Also, the Asarigawa Onsen village, about a 30-40 minute drive from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring resort nestled in the mountains.

Q. Are there spots in Otaru that can be enjoyed with children?

Hands-on glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) offer plans that elementary school students can participate in. Also, Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What tourist destinations can I visit on a day trip from Otaru?

Sapporo (approx. 32 minutes) is, of course, an option, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave cruise in summer, approx. 1 hour). These are popular day trip courses. You can enjoy a wide area of western Hokkaido based in Otaru.
