Home | Otaru Sightseeing Portal | Catholic Otaru Church Tomioka Cathedral
About a 10-minute walk from JR Otaru Station. Slightly set back from the so-called "Jigoku-zaka" (Hell Slope) that leads to Otaru University of Commerce, there is a beautiful, fairytale-like church known to locals as "Tomioka Church."
Its current official name is "Catholic Otaru Church Tomioka Cathedral," and until 2015, it was called Catholic Tomioka Church. Built in 1929 (Showa 4), it is designated as Otaru City Historic Building No. 70.

The exterior seems to have been designed in imitation of Oura Cathedral in Nagasaki and other churches, with its distinctive red conical roof and octagonal bell tower, featuring a blend of medieval Romanesque and Gothic styles.

One of the major highlights of Tomioka Cathedral is the many stained glass windows that sparkle with light. The stained glass in the large windows of the chapel dates back to the time of construction and features simple geometric patterns. Soft light filters through, illuminating the white plaster walls. Various types of glass are used in the stained glass, and the finely textured pink, yellow, and green glass is reportedly no longer produced in Japan.

The chapel is open to anyone for worship at any time. Unusually for a church, photography inside the chapel is also permitted.

Otaru Sightseeing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Here are answers to common questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.
Q. How to get to Otaru?
The most convenient way from Sapporo is via the JR Hakodate Line; the Rapid "Airport" train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, taking about 75 minutes directly from New Chitose Airport.
Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?
Half a day to a full day is a good estimate if you want to leisurely explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street. If you add glass craft experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be even more fulfilling.
Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?
Dusk to night is particularly recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflections on the water create a scene iconic of Otaru. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event is held, offering a magical atmosphere.
Q. What gourmet foods should I definitely eat in Otaru?
Sushi, seafood rice bowls, and grilled seafood are especially famous. Otaru has so many famous sushi restaurants that there's even an area called "Sushi-ya Dori." Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.
Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?
Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass shops like Kitaichi Glass and the Otaru Music Box Museum main building.
Can I walk to Otaru's tourist attractions?
Otaru Station, the canal, and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can fully enjoy sightseeing without a rental car.
When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?
Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather, perfect for strolling, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and delicious seafood. Winter features snowscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring is less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed visit.
Are there hot springs in Otaru?
There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Also, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring resort nestled in the mountains.
Are there any child-friendly spots in Otaru?
Hands-on glass workshops (blown glass, sandblasting, etc.) offer plans suitable for elementary school children. Also, the Otaru Aquarium (in the Shukutsu area) is a popular family-friendly spot where you can enjoy shows featuring seals and dolphins.
What tourist destinations can I visit on a day trip from Otaru?
Sapporo (approx. 32 minutes) is, of course, popular, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 minutes) and Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave cruise in summer, approx. 1 hour). Otaru can be a base for widely enjoying the western Hokkaido area.
