About a 10-minute walk from JR Otaru Station. Slightly set back from the so-called "Jigoku-zaka" (Hell Slope) that leads to Otaru University of Commerce, there is a beautiful, fairytale-like church known to locals as "Tomioka Church."

Its current official name is "Catholic Otaru Church Tomioka Cathedral," and until 2015, it was called Catholic Tomioka Church. Built in 1929 (Showa 4), it is designated as Otaru City Historic Building No. 70.

Taken from the side of Tomioka Cathedral at dusk, when the surroundings have darkened. The beautiful light leaking from inside through the stained glass is an impressive shot.

The exterior seems to have been designed in imitation of Oura Cathedral in Nagasaki and other churches, with its distinctive red conical roof and octagonal bell tower, featuring a blend of medieval Romanesque and Gothic styles.

In the dimly lit chapel, the sunlight streaming through the beautiful arched stained-glass windows arranged in fours is stunning.

One of the major highlights of Tomioka Cathedral is the many stained glass windows that sparkle with light. The stained glass in the large windows of the chapel dates back to the time of construction and features simple geometric patterns. Soft light filters through, illuminating the white plaster walls. Various types of glass are used in the stained glass, and the finely textured pink, yellow, and green glass is reportedly no longer produced in Japan.

During the Otaru Snow Light Path event, candles glowing softly within heart-shaped ice candles arranged in the front garden of Tomioka Cathedral are beautiful.

The chapel is open to anyone for worship at any time. Unusually for a church, photography inside the chapel is also permitted.
