LeTAO, established in 1998 (Heisei 10) in a prime location facing the Marchen Crossing, operates under the theme "Northern Sweets Manner ~Delivering sweets rooted in the northern land to the whole country~". Its official name is "Otaru Western Confectionery LeTAO."

The main store of Western confectionery LeTAO, located near the Marchen Square on Sakaimachi Street, is marked by a tall Western-style tower.

Its name is now so well-known that few people in the country are unfamiliar with it. It is one of the must-visit spots when in Otaru.

The cafe on the second floor of the main store offers a wide variety of menu items, including authentic Western dishes and fresh cake sets.

Currently, there are six LeTAO stores in Otaru, each with a different concept, offering a wide array of exclusive products and exquisite sweets. LeTAO's fame across the country was solidified by its milky, melt-in-your-mouth cheesecake, "Double Fromage." After being featured on a TV program in 2005 (Heisei 17), it became a nationwide sensation. Nowadays, LeTAO is synonymous with Otaru sweets.

In summer, parfait sets featuring Hokkaido fruits are also a popular menu item.

Otaru Tourism Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

We answer frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How to get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Line; the rapid "Airport" train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with a direct journey of about 75 minutes from New Chitose Airport.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?

If you want to explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street at a leisurely pace, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. Adding glass craft experiences, the music box museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit the Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is particularly recommended. The gas lamps along the stone warehouses and their reflection on the water create a scene that symbolizes Otaru. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

What gourmet food should I definitely eat in Otaru?

Sushi, kaisen-don (seafood bowls), and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru is home to many renowned sushi restaurants, so much so that there's an area called "Sushi-ya Dori" (Sushi Restaurant Street). Also, local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecake and soft-serve ice cream are not to be missed.

Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of the Music Box Museum.

Q. Can Otaru's tourist spots be explored on foot?

Otaru Station to the canal and Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can easily explore without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru tourism?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather, perfect for strolling, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful autumn leaves and delicious seafood. Winter features snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," and spring sees fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Are there hot springs in Otaru?

There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru City. Additionally, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a tranquil hot spring area in the mountains.

What spots in Otaru are enjoyable for families with children?

Experience-based glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) offer plans for elementary school children and up. Also, the Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is a popular family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

What tourist destinations can be visited on a day trip from Otaru?

Sapporo (approx. 32 minutes) is a popular choice, as are Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Grotto cruise in summer, approx. 1 hour). Otaru serves as a great base for exploring the wider western Hokkaido area.
