Otaru Sankaku Market, located just a 1-minute walk from JR Otaru Station, is named for the triangular shape of its land and roof.

You'll be spoilt for choice with the wide variety of ingredients in the Otaru specialty

Sankaku Market's motto is "Absolutely cheap!!" You can enjoy shopping in an atmosphere unique to a market, with lively calls from vendors on both sides. The market is about 200m long, with 16 shops lining a narrow, approximately 2-meter-wide sloped path. Six of these shops are restaurants where you can enjoy meals from 7 AM to 5 PM.

Each store in Otaru Sankaku Market also offers a wide variety of Hokkaido-specific seafood souvenirs such as crab, sea urchin, and salmon roe, caught in the waters near Hokkaido.

They offer rice bowls made with fresh seafood and daily specials using seasonal ingredients. You can also have items purchased at the market cooked on the spot to create your own original rice bowl.

At each store in Otaru Sankaku Market, whole or filleted autumn salmon, caught in Hokkaido, are displayed in abundance during autumn, a seasonal sight.

The market's origins trace back to around 1948, shortly after the war. It began with 7-8 street vendors setting up stalls in front of Otaru Station and subsequently developed into a morning market. It's a popular and highly convenient market not only for fresh seafood like crab, sea urchin, and scallops, but also for everyday groceries, fruits, and daily necessities, making it perfect for regular shopping or finding souvenirs.

When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather, perfect for strolling, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and delicious seafood.
