Home | Otaru Sightseeing Portal | Otaru Sankaku Market
Otaru Sankaku Market, located just a 1-minute walk from JR Otaru Station, is named for the triangular shape of its land and roof.

Sankaku Market's motto is "Absolutely cheap!!" You can enjoy shopping in an atmosphere unique to a market, with lively calls from vendors on both sides. The market is about 200m long, with 16 shops lining a narrow, approximately 2-meter-wide sloped path. Six of these shops are restaurants where you can enjoy meals from 7 AM to 5 PM.

They offer rice bowls made with fresh seafood and daily specials using seasonal ingredients. You can also have items purchased at the market cooked on the spot to create your own original rice bowl.

The market's origins trace back to around 1948, shortly after the war. It began with 7-8 street vendors setting up stalls in front of Otaru Station and subsequently developed into a morning market. It's a popular and highly convenient market not only for fresh seafood like crab, sea urchin, and scallops, but also for everyday groceries, fruits, and daily necessities, making it perfect for regular shopping or finding souvenirs.

Otaru Sightseeing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
We answer frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.
Q. How do I get to Otaru?
The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Main Line, with the rapid "Airport" train taking about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with a direct 75-minute ride from New Chitose Airport.
Q. How much time is needed for Otaru sightseeing?
If you want to leisurely explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. To include glassblowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, an overnight stay of 1 night and 2 days would make your trip even more fulfilling.
Q. When is the best time to visit the Otaru Canal?
Dusk to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflections on the water create a scene iconic to Otaru. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event is held, offering a magical atmosphere.
What are the must-try gourmet foods in Otaru?
Sushi, kaisendon (seafood rice bowls), and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru is home to many renowned sushi restaurants, even having an area called "Sushi Restaurant Street." Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.
Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?
Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of the Music Box Museum.
Can I walk to Otaru's tourist attractions?
The area from Otaru Station to the canal and Sakaimachi Street is all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can easily sightsee without a rental car.
When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?
Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather, perfect for strolling, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and delicious seafood. Winter brings snowscapes and the "Otaru Snow Light Path," and spring is less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed visit.
Are there hot springs in Otaru?
There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Additionally, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is a popular quiet hot spring resort nestled in the mountains.
Are there any spots in Otaru enjoyable for families with children?
Hands-on glass workshops (such as glassblowing and sandblasting) offer programs for elementary school children and older. Otaru Aquarium (in the Shukutsu area) is also popular with families for its seal and dolphin shows.
What tourist destinations can be visited as a day trip from Otaru?
Sapporo (approx. 32 minutes) is certainly an option, along with Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (summer Blue Cave cruises, approx. 1 hour) are popular day trip courses. You can extensively enjoy the western Hokkaido area with Otaru as your base.
