One of Otaru's most popular tourist spots, the Otaru Music Box Museum, is Japan's largest music box specialty store, and is marked by a steam clock at Marchen Crossroads. There are seven sister stores in Otaru, including the main store at Marchen Crossroads.
Including original music boxes, there are about 5,000 types of music boxes in all the buildings, totaling about 80,000 items on display and for sale. The main building alone has about 3,400 types of music boxes, totaling more than 25,000 items.
The building was constructed in 1915 (Taisho 4) as the headquarters of Kyosei Co., Ltd., a leading rice merchant. On March 29, 1989 (Showa 64), the same day the Otaru Music Box Museum opened, it was registered as a designated historic building by Otaru City.
The decorated ceiling, handrails, and second-floor corridors have all been preserved as they were when the store was first built. The store is divided into five floors, each with its own theme and beautiful decorations and music boxes. The steam clock that serves as the symbol of the main entrance is the world's largest steam clock, measuring 5.5m in height, 1m in width, and weighing 1.5 tons. It was made by Raymond Sanders, a Canadian clockmaker who created the world's first steam clock. Powered by steam, five whistles play a five-note melody every 15 minutes.
