Otaru Music Box Museum, one of Otaru's popular tourist attractions, is Japan's largest music box specialty store, marked by the steam clock at Marchen Intersection. There are seven sister stores in Otaru, including the main building at Marchen Intersection.

The museum displays and sells approximately 5,000 types and a total of 80,000 music boxes, including original designs. The main building alone is said to house approximately 3,400 types and over 25,000 music boxes.

The interior of the main building, lined with tens of thousands of music boxes, is truly magnificent.

The building was constructed in 1915 as the head office of Kosei Co., Ltd., a prominent rice merchant. It was registered as an Otaru City Designated Historic Building on March 29, 1989, when the Otaru Music Box Museum opened.

The ornate ceiling, decorative handrails, and second-floor corridors have been preserved as they were at the time of construction. The interior is divided into five floors, each featuring beautiful decorations and music boxes with different themes. The steam clock, a symbol of the main entrance, is the world's largest, standing 5.5m tall, 1m wide, and weighing 1.5t. It was created by Raymond Saunders, a Canadian clockmaker who made the world's first steam clock. Every 15 minutes, five whistles play a five-note melody powered by steam.

Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you include glassblowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be even more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit the Otaru Canal?

Sushi, seafood donburi, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru is home to many renowned sushi restaurants, so much so that there's an area called "Sushi Street." Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather perfect for strolls, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and seafood. Winter boasts snowscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring has fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?
