Otaru Music Box Museum, one of Otaru's popular tourist attractions, is Japan's largest music box specialty store, marked by the steam clock at Marchen Intersection. There are seven sister stores in Otaru, including the main building at Marchen Intersection.

The museum displays and sells approximately 5,000 types and a total of 80,000 music boxes, including original designs. The main building alone is said to house approximately 3,400 types and over 25,000 music boxes.

The building was constructed in 1915 as the head office of Kosei Co., Ltd., a prominent rice merchant. It was registered as an Otaru City Designated Historic Building on March 29, 1989, when the Otaru Music Box Museum opened.

The ornate ceiling, decorative handrails, and second-floor corridors have been preserved as they were at the time of construction. The interior is divided into five floors, each featuring beautiful decorations and music boxes with different themes. The steam clock, a symbol of the main entrance, is the world's largest, standing 5.5m tall, 1m wide, and weighing 1.5t. It was created by Raymond Saunders, a Canadian clockmaker who made the world's first steam clock. Every 15 minutes, five whistles play a five-note melody powered by steam.

Otaru Tourism Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Here are answers to frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.
Q. How to get to Otaru?
The most convenient way from Sapporo is by JR Hakodate Line; the Rapid Airport train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It also takes about 75 minutes from Shin-Chitose Airport without transfers, making it easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido.
Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?
If you want to leisurely explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you include glassblowing experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be even more fulfilling.
Q. When is the best time to visit the Otaru Canal?
Dusk to night is especially recommended. The gas lamps along the stone warehouses light up, and their reflections on the water create a scene iconic to Otaru. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event is held, offering a magical atmosphere.
Q. What gourmet food should I definitely eat in Otaru?
Sushi, seafood donburi, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru is home to many renowned sushi restaurants, so much so that there's an area called "Sushi Street." Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.
Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?
Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops just by walking along the street, including specialty glass shops like Kitaichi Glass and the main building of the Music Box Museum.
Q. Can I walk to Otaru's tourist spots?
Otaru Station to the Canal to Sakaimachi Street are all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can enjoy sightseeing without a rental car.
Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?
Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather perfect for strolls, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and seafood. Winter boasts snowscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring has fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.
Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?
There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Additionally, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring resort nestled in the mountains.
Q. Are there child-friendly spots in Otaru?
Hands-on glass workshops (such as glass blowing and sandblasting) offer plans for children of elementary school age and older. Otaru Aquarium (in the Shukutsu area) is also a popular family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.
Q. What tourist destinations can I visit on a day trip from Otaru?
Sapporo (approx. 32 min), Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 min), and Shakotan Peninsula (Blue Cave Cruise in summer, approx. 1 hour) are popular day trip options. You can enjoy a wide area of western Hokkaido based in Otaru.
