Kitaichi Glass, famous as a mecca for Otaru tourism, boasts 17 stores in the city, including glass galleries like the Third Building, as well as restaurants and cafes. Kitaichi Glass is not only Otaru's representative glass brand but has also grown alongside Otaru's modern history.

The Third Building, the first store Kitaichi Glass opened when it first expanded into Sakaimachi Street

Asahara Glass, the predecessor of Kitaichi Glass, was founded in 1901 (Meiji 34). It rapidly expanded its business by manufacturing and selling oil lamps and fishing floats. However, with the spread of electricity and oil, the era shifted from glass to plastic. By 1960 (Showa 35), Asahara Glass was the only glass manufacturer left in the city.

The tide began to turn again in the 1970s. In 1971 (Showa 46), the company changed its name to the current Kitaichi Glass. They succeeded by deliberately displaying glass oil lamps, which used to be everyday necessities, in their storefronts. At that time, oil lamps brought back as souvenirs by backpackers, known as "kani-zoku" (crab tribe), became popular as interior decorations, and their reputation quickly spread nationwide.

In the 1980s, with the redevelopment of the Otaru Canal, a fishing warehouse built in 1891 (Meiji 24) was renovated into a permanent gallery for tourists, which gained immense popularity. Through this development, Kitaichi Glass successfully transformed its business from manufacturing and selling lighting to selling glassware.

Currently, in addition to purchasing and selling products from domestic and international glass manufacturers and trading companies, and operating its own planned products and affiliated factories, it also handles restaurants, cafes, and sales of alcoholic beverages such as sake and wine.
