Home | Otaru Travel Guide | Kitaichi Glass
Kitaichi Glass, famous as a mecca for Otaru tourism, boasts 17 stores in the city, including glass galleries like the Third Building, as well as restaurants and cafes. Kitaichi Glass is not only Otaru's representative glass brand but has also grown alongside Otaru's modern history.

Asahara Glass, the predecessor of Kitaichi Glass, was founded in 1901 (Meiji 34). It rapidly expanded its business by manufacturing and selling oil lamps and fishing floats. However, with the spread of electricity and oil, the era shifted from glass to plastic. By 1960 (Showa 35), Asahara Glass was the only glass manufacturer left in the city.

The tide began to turn again in the 1970s. In 1971 (Showa 46), the company changed its name to the current Kitaichi Glass. They succeeded by deliberately displaying glass oil lamps, which used to be everyday necessities, in their storefronts. At that time, oil lamps brought back as souvenirs by backpackers, known as "kani-zoku" (crab tribe), became popular as interior decorations, and their reputation quickly spread nationwide.

In the 1980s, with the redevelopment of the Otaru Canal, a fishing warehouse built in 1891 (Meiji 24) was renovated into a permanent gallery for tourists, which gained immense popularity. Through this development, Kitaichi Glass successfully transformed its business from manufacturing and selling lighting to selling glassware.

Currently, in addition to purchasing and selling products from domestic and international glass manufacturers and trading companies, and operating its own planned products and affiliated factories, it also handles restaurants, cafes, and sales of alcoholic beverages such as sake and wine.

Otaru Tourism Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
We answer frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.
Q. How to get to Otaru?
The most convenient way from Sapporo is via the JR Hakodate Main Line; the "Airport" rapid train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible for tourists from outside Hokkaido, with a direct 75-minute ride from New Chitose Airport.
Q. How long does Otaru sightseeing take?
Half a day to a full day is a good estimate if you want to leisurely explore the main areas like the canal and Sakaimachi Street. If you add glass craft experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be more fulfilling.
Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?
Evening to night is especially recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflections on the water are a quintessential Otaru sight. During winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" event creates a magical atmosphere.
Q. What are the must-try foods in Otaru?
Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru even has an area called "Sushi-ya Dori" (Sushi Restaurant Street) because of its many renowned sushi establishments. Also, don't miss local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecakes and soft-serve ice cream.
Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?
Workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can stop by many shops just by walking along the street, such as specialty glass stores like Kitaichi Glass and the Otaru Music Box Museum main building.
Q. Can Otaru's tourist spots be explored on foot?
The area from Otaru Station to the canal and Sakaimachi Street is all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can easily sightsee without a rental car.
Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?
Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) is ideal for walks with mild weather, and autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and delicious seafood. Winter boasts snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," while spring sees fewer tourists, allowing for a more relaxed visit.
Are there hot springs in Otaru?
There are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs scattered throughout Otaru city. Also, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo hot spring village, located about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring resort in the mountains.
Q. Are there any spots in Otaru that are enjoyable for children?
Hands-on glass workshops (blown glass, sandblasting, etc.) offer plans suitable for elementary school students. Also, the Otaru Aquarium (Shukutsu area) is popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.
