About a 5-minute walk from Otaru Canal, in Inai 1-chome, near the former Temiya Line, there's a bistro known only to locals. Its name is "Bistrot Blanche."

The mushroom cream pasta I ordered for lunch is a recommended dish.

Renovated from a retro brick building from the Taisho era, it offers original cuisine blending Italian and French styles. The interior features 5 counter seats and 5 tables in total (a mix of 4-person and 2-person tables). With a spacious, relaxed atmosphere and pleasant music, it’s a calm setting perfect for enjoying a meal and conversation.

The interior, like a European street restaurant that isn't overly fancy, allows for a relaxed dining experience.

The lunch menu is very reasonably priced, starting from around 1,500 yen, and includes various pastas, pizzas, and course menus with fish or meat dishes, all with drinks included. Dinner courses are also very reasonably priced, starting from around 3,000 yen, with options for a fish course with appetizer, a meat course, or a double main course.

The two European-style lamps on the wall contribute to the restaurant's ambiance.

While Otaru is famous for its sushi and seafood bowls, I highly recommend Bistrot Blanche for dates or birthday celebrations with a special someone, where you can travel to Otaru and immerse yourself in its unique atmosphere. The portion sizes are generous, so even young people will be fully satisfied.

Otaru Sightseeing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

We answer frequently asked questions from first-time visitors to Otaru.

Q. How do I get to Otaru?

The most convenient way from Sapporo is via the JR Hakodate Main Line. The Rapid "Airport" train takes about 32 minutes from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. It's also easily accessible from New Chitose Airport, taking about 75 minutes without transfers, making it convenient for tourists from outside Hokkaido.

Q. How much time does Otaru sightseeing take?

If you want to leisurely explore the main areas like around the canal and Sakaimachi Street, half a day to a full day is a good estimate. If you add glass craft experiences, the Music Box Museum, and meals, a 1-night, 2-day trip will be more fulfilling.

Q. When is the best time to visit Otaru Canal?

Dusk to night is particularly recommended. Gas lamps light up along the stone warehouses, and the reflections on the water create a scene iconic of Otaru. In winter (January-February), the "Otaru Snow Light Path" is held, offering a magical atmosphere.

Q. What gourmet food should I definitely eat in Otaru?

Sushi, seafood bowls, and grilled seafood are particularly famous. Otaru is home to many renowned sushi restaurants, even having an area called "Sushi-ya Dori" (Sushi Street). Also, local sweets like LeTAO's cheesecake and soft-serve ice cream are not to be missed.

Q. Where can I buy Otaru glass and music boxes?

Experience workshops and shops are concentrated on Sakaimachi Street. You can visit many shops like specialty glass stores such as Kitaichi Glass and the Otaru Music Box Museum Main Building just by walking along the street.

Q. Can Otaru's tourist spots be explored on foot?

The area from Otaru Station to the Canal and Sakaimachi Street is all within walking distance (about 10 minutes from the station to the canal). Major spots are compactly located, so you can fully enjoy sightseeing without a rental car.

Q. When is the best season for Otaru sightseeing?

Each season offers different charms. Summer (July-August) has mild weather, perfect for walks, while autumn (September-October) offers beautiful foliage and seafood. Winter boasts snowy landscapes and the "Snow Light Path," and spring sees fewer tourists, allowing for a calmer visit.

Q. Are there hot springs in Otaru?

Within Otaru city, there are hotels and ryokans with natural hot springs. Additionally, the Asarigawa Onsenkyo, about 30-40 minutes by car from Otaru, is popular as a quiet hot spring resort nestled in the mountains.

Q. Are there child-friendly spots in Otaru?

Hands-on glass workshops (such as glassblowing and sandblasting) offer plans for elementary school children and older. Otaru Aquarium (in the Shukutsu area) is also popular as a family-friendly spot where you can enjoy seal and dolphin shows.

Q. What day-trip destinations are accessible from Otaru?

Sapporo (approx. 32 minutes) is a given, but Yoichi (Nikka Whisky Distillery, approx. 20 minutes) and the Shakotan Peninsula (summer Blue Grotto cruise, approx. 1 hour) are popular day-trip courses. Otaru serves as a great base for exploring a wider area of western Hokkaido.
