At the northern end of the Otaru Canal is the Rinyu Morning Market, a hidden gem frequently visited by locals. This historic market came into being over 50 years ago when a grain warehouse became vacant. Nearby, there are also attractions such as the former Otaru Branch of Nippon Yusen Kaisha, a nationally important cultural property, Canal Park, and the main building of the Otaru City Museum.

Rinyu Morning Market is also famous for being the earliest-opening market in Otaru, operating from 4:00 AM to 2:00 PM. However, some shops don't open until after 7:00 AM, so it's around after 7:00 AM that all shops are fully operational, with fresh catches and other goods available. If you're looking for the freshest items, the best time to visit is around 7:00-8:00 AM when fish arrives from the wholesale market.

Rinyu Morning Market has about 12 shops, including fishmongers, dried goods stores, and eateries, so it's not a very large market, but its abundant selection and reasonable prices are on par with other markets in Otaru City. You'll find fresh seafood just landed from the waters near Otaru.

In autumn, salmon, ikura (salmon roe), flounder, and autumn mantis shrimp are available, while winter brings hachikaku (sailfin poacher), abalone, and cod. Spring offers herring, trout, and spring mantis shrimp. Summer features sea urchin and scallops. Atka mackerel and giant Pacific octopus are available year-round. In addition to seafood, Hokkaido-grown vegetables, fruits, and homemade side dishes are also sold.

One of the characteristics of Rinyu Morning Market is that many shops are friendly, and the prices are overwhelmingly more reasonable compared to other markets in Otaru City, which is a major appeal. A considerable number of customers are locals or come from nearby areas like Sapporo, as if it were their own home.
